Restoring the Gut Microbiome in ME/CFS

Restoring the Gut Microbiome in ME/CFS

Background

About the study

Testing Personalised Interventions to Restore the Gut Microbiome in ME/CFS

In ME/CFS, changes in the gut microbiome may contribute to symptoms. When the balance of bacteria in the gut is disrupted, the body may produce fewer important substances. These substances normally play a role in energy production, immune function, and recovery.

Aim and Approach
The aim is to understand how the gut microbiome functions in ME/CFS and how it might be restored. Specialised gut models will be developed for this purpose. These models will be used to test potential treatments, such as beneficial bacteria or dietary fibres (probiotics and prebiotics).

Stool samples from people with ME/CFS and healthy volunteers will be collected. Two different models will then be used to investigate how the bacteria function and how the substances they produce affect the gut lining.

Expected Results
The researchers will develop laboratory models that mimic the gut microbiome of people with ME/CFS. These models will be used to test different treatments aimed at restoring the balance in the gut. This will help identify which interventions can improve the balance of the gut microbiome and the production of important substances. This knowledge will contribute to the development of personalised treatments that support the restoration of gut health.
